Today is World Food Day, but there is still around 239 million people in Africa still without anything to eat.

What is World Food Day?
Today is the date that’s focused upon this very fact, and is a day when we attempt to drastically reduce this number of people without food. It is a day of action against hunger. Many people around the world come together to eradicate hunger…’The only acceptable number in the world is “ZERO”.
The date marks and celebrates the creation of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on October 16, 1945 Quebec, Canada. However, the establishment of the World Food Day didn’t arise until 1979.
Every year we see the support of thousands taking part in hunger walks, World Food Day lunches/Dinners, and even food packaging events.
Why do we care?
We care because the right to food is a basic human right. Lets look at the facts…
- The costs of hunger and malnutrition fall heavily on the most vulnerable.
- 60% of the hungry in the world are women.
- Almost 5 million children under the age of 5 die of malnutrition-related causes every year.
- 4 in 10 children in poor countries are malnourished damaging their bodies and brains.
- This can happen to anyone…14.3% of Amercians do not have enough to eat.
We care because together we can eliminate world hunger in our life time. Our world produces enough food for everyone on this planet…now why is it that its not reaching the places that need it the most?
What has been achieved?
In 2015 alone, 40 countries have exceeded in halving the proportion of people that suffer from hunger. There has also been other dramatic improvements that indicate since 1990, we have seen the extreme poverty rates have also been cut by 50%. Along with, over the last 20 years, the likelyhood of a child dying before the age of five has been nearly cut by 50%. Some staggering facts to outline World Hunger is constantly improving.
